Walter de la Mare’s Horseman

Here comes an Ascended Master

************

I heard a horseman

Ride over the hill;

The moon shone clear,

The night was still;

His helm was silver,

And pale was he;

And the horse he rode

Was of ivory.

This short poem is a symbolic portrayal of an Ascended Master as he chooses rebirth and return to incarnation to teach and help humanity.

The Horseman riding over the hill is his return to the physical plane. The narrator is first made aware of his entry by hearing him and although at this point he does not see the Horseman he knows who he is and that his entry is dramatic. The effect of his aura precedes his physical presence.

The move in the third line to visual imagery also conveys the move from higher planes into physical manifestation

The imagery now becomes visual with a description of a clear moonlit night. This symbolizes the higher planes of nature on which the Ascended Master can work and the higher levels of consciousness he has attained.

His Silver Helm is the knowledge he brings into this incarnation which he can impart. His pale body shows his lack of attachment to the physical world and the refined nature of his physical body.

His Ivory Horse is his mission in this life. Ivory is a valuable commodity of great quality. This is no ordinary horse and this will be no ordinary life.
